Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
Have you ever reached a moment in life where you quietly say to yourself: “I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Not necessarily life itself—but the constant effort of trying to do the right thing.
I’ve had that thought every few weeks since May 10, 1997. That’s the day I had my traumatic brain injury. My disabled life has become my new normal, as it happened nearly 30 years ago.
There are days though that I don’t want to expend all the energy necessary to navigate my daily life. Life shouldn’t be this challenging.
The constant effort to do the right thing is not mine alone. We all have to manage obstacles in trying to live our best life with others.
Trying to be patient, trying to forgive, trying to stay faithful when things feel unfair, trying to respond kindly when someone treats you poorly.
After a while, it can feel exhausting!
And if we’re honest, there are days when following Christ feels less like a joyful walk and more like an uphill climb.
The Struggle Is Real
We think that once we follow Christ, the struggle to do good should get easier. But the Bible actually tells us the opposite.
In his Epistle to the Romans, the apostle Paul admits something deeply relatable:
For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.
Romans 7:19 (NIV)
Sound familiar?
Even Paul struggled. He wanted to do good, but he felt the pull of human weakness. That tension is part of living in a broken world while belonging to a holy God.
The struggle itself is not a sign that your faith is failing.
It’s a sign that your heart cares about honoring God.
Even Jesus faced the weight of obedience
Before going to the cross, Jesus Christ prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane:
My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.
Matthew 26:39 (NIV)
In that moment, Jesus expressed something deeply human. The path ahead was painful, and He acknowledged the weight of it.
Yet He chose obedience.
Not because it was easy—but because it was right.
Sometimes faithfulness means continuing even when every part of us wants to quit.
Why Doing Good Can Feel So Hard
The world often rewards things that run opposite to God’s ways:
Selfishness can get ahead.
Kindness can be ignored.
Integrity can cost opportunities.
Forgiveness can feel unfair.
When you keep choosing the path God calls you to, it can feel like you’re swimming upstream.
But the Bible reminds us that God sees every unseen act of faithfulness.
Your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV)
Nothing done for God is ever wasted…
Not your patience.
Not your prayers.
Not your quiet acts of love.
When We Don’t Want to Do It Anymore
Maybe the moment we say, “I don’t want to do this anymore,” is actually the moment God is trying to teach us something important.
We cannot live the Christ-centered life by willpower alone.
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 (NIV)
Our life in Christ was never meant to be powered by our strength.
It was meant to be lived through His. When we reach the end of ourselves, we finally learn to depend on the Lord.
Don’t Give Up
If we feel tired today…
If doing the right thing feels heavy…
If faithfulness feels unnoticed…
Remember that God sees what others do not. And His promise still stands:
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
The harvest may not come immediately…
But God never forgets the seeds planted in obedience.
Lord,
Sometimes we feel tired of trying so hard to do the right thing. There are days when we want to give up, when faithfulness feels difficult and unnoticed.
Thank You for reminding us through Your Word and others around us that even the strongest believers struggled. Help us remember that we am not alone in this battle.
Give us the strength to keep choosing what is right, even when it feels hard. When our own strength runs out, remind us to depend on Yours.
Teach us to remain in You so that our lives will bear fruit that honors You.
