Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13, 14 (NIV)
A new year often invites reflection. We look back at what was and ahead to what might be. Some of us step into January with excitement and clear goals; others carry weariness, unanswered prayers, or disappointment from the year before. Yet a new year offers us something deeper than resolutions—it offers renewal of perspective.
Scripture reminds us that God is always doing something new, even when our circumstances feel unchanged.
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
A new outlook begins when we choose to see our lives through God’s promises rather than our past failures or present fears.
Maybe our dreams are still not fulfilled. Maybe we’ve lost a loved-one we counted on. Perhaps a disappointment or tragedy has changed our way of living.
Having a new outlook doesn’t mean everything suddenly becomes easy. It means we decide to trust God with fresh eyes. We wake up each day asking, “Lord, how can I see this differently?” Instead of focusing on what we lack, we notice God’s daily provision. Instead of replaying regret, we receive grace. Instead of fearing the unknown, we walk forward in faith.
The apostle Paul encourages us…
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Renewal starts within. When we allow God to shape our thoughts, our outlook changes—and our lives follow. This year, may our greatest change not be on our calendars, but in our hearts.
Maybe God is asking us to develop a new dream for our life. Perhaps we need to embrace life without our loved-one. We can do it as a tribute to them.
A new year is a gift. A new outlook is a choice. With God’s help, we can embrace both.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for the gift of a new year. Help me release what no longer serves Your purpose in my life.
Renew my mind, soften my heart, and give me a fresh outlook rooted in faith, hope, and trust in You. Guide my steps, shape my thoughts, and help me see each day through Your grace.

Mary, your words are uplifting and inspiring. I appreciate your time and effort.
Mary, I love the line of prayer asking God to show us how to see things differently. Perspective is so important, and seeking God’s perspective in our lives can change everything because it helps us walk in trust. I agree with the prayer thanking God for a renewed mine, a softened heart, and a fresh outlook. Amen to all of those!
